Late Spring, Long Winter

At long last the winter has come to an end and we are finally seeing the start of spring. Despite the bad weather (snow, colder than normal temperaatures for this time of year) we at Herwish have been busy with the erection of 2 new pig houses: A boar house 40x20 and an open plan free range pen 50x20. There was lots of action with concrete pumped in for the bases and all the Herwish animals looking on with great interest from their cosy pens.

We took the time out from our busy schedule to attend the Pig Paradise pig keeping course - which was brilliant fun, and really well presented (despite the awful weather) by knowledgeable and very friendly people. All in all well recommended for any rare breed pig keepers and we have begun implementing really helpful and positive changes into Herwish day to day running.

One to watch for the pork lovers out there: The Hairy Bikers Pork special recipes, just seen on the BBC recently yummy!

Rare breed piglets feeding

A short video of the rare breed cross piglets feeding with mum away from all the recent cold and rainy weather outside at the moment. These piglets are Saddlebacks crossed with Gloucester Old Spots.

Recorded this weekend inside at Herwish farm.

Hungry, happy little pigs!

More new arrivals and other pig news

Thursday just gone saw some really cold, wet weather come in so we had the 3 pregnant sows in and the heated lamps on. The first sow started farrowing 6am Saturday morning and we had 11 lovely, healthy piglets suckling nicely with mum. 3 of these were little beauties with some lovely typical rare breed Gloucester Old Spot markings and one of the three with some cool looking ginger stripes (see photos).

4pm on the Saturday afternoon saw the second sow start to farrow and she was comfortable with 8 newborn piglets. It was becoming a busy weekend and even though it was horrible outside, with rain, damp and temperatures dropping, the new arrivals were fine and warm inside.

Sunday evening 6pm and the last of our 3 sows gave birth to 11 more beautiful rare breed Herwish hogs.

Gloucestershire Old Spots

The Gloucestershire Old Spot Pig

Here at Herwish our pork tastes so good because we cross the rare breed Gloucestershire Old Spots with the Wessex Saddle-back pig.

Gloucestershire Old Spots are the oldest official known breed in England and originated around the Berkeley Vale on the river Severn, south-west England and were usually kept on the famous local cider farms.

We like this aspect of the pigs history and are proud to say that our pigs at Herwish also eat the local Kentish apples that go to making Biddendens Cider. This, coupled with the successful breeding program with the Saddle-backs makes for a completely natural fine tasting pork hog roast.
